General information
What is the FAA?+
The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) is the national aviation authority of the United States. It issues airmen certificates — including the mechanic (A&P) certificate — and sets the standards that govern aircraft maintenance.
What is A&P?+
A&P stands for Airframe & Powerplant — the FAA mechanic certificate that authorizes you to maintain, repair, and approve aircraft and engines for return to service in the United States.
How can I get my A&P certificate?+
You first meet the FAA's eligibility requirements (through documented work experience or an FAA-approved school), then pass three written knowledge tests — General, Airframe, and Powerplant — and finally an oral & practical exam with a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).
What's the difference between an "Aviation Maintenance Technician" and an "Aviation Mechanic"?+
The terms are used interchangeably in everyday conversation. "Aviation Mechanic" reflects the FAA certificate title, while "Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT)" is the broader industry job title for the same skilled professional.
Written tests
How many written tests are there?+
Three: General, Airframe, and Powerplant. Each is a multiple-choice knowledge test you take at an FAA-approved testing center.
What score do I need to pass?+
A score of 70% or higher is required to pass each written test. You'll receive an Airman Knowledge Test Report showing your result and the subject areas to review.
Do I need the writtens done before the oral & practical?+
Yes. You must pass the relevant written tests before you sit the oral & practical exam with a DME. Keep your test reports — they're valid for a set period, so plan your DME accordingly.
Oral & practical (DME) tests
What is the oral & practical test?+
It's the hands-on portion of certification. A Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) asks you questions (the oral) and has you perform real maintenance tasks (the practical) to confirm you can do the work correctly and safely.
Who is a DME?+
A Designated Mechanic Examiner is an experienced mechanic authorized by the FAA to administer the oral & practical exam and recommend candidates for certification.
How does your prep help with the oral & practical?+
We focus your brush-up on exactly what the DME will ask and watch for — drilling the key projects and questions one-on-one so you walk in calm, fast, and ready. Many students join the week before their test date.
Scheduling & logistics
When should I come for prep?+
Most students join for a focused brush-up the week before their DME test date. Email us with your timeline and we'll find a slot that works.
Where are you located?+
We're in the Space Coast, Florida area. Prep is in person and hands-on, in small groups.
How do I book?+
Just email aandptestprep@gmail.com with your test date and the areas you want to cover — we'll take it from there.
I'm outside the U.S. — can you help with FAA privileges?+
Yes. If your address is outside the USA, you may need a U.S. Agent under 14 CFR Part 3. We offer a U.S. Agent Service for students and other individuals.
